Definition
Decorated with or covered by a baldachin, which is a rich cloth canopy or ornamental structure hung above something important like a throne or altar.
Etymology
From baldachin (a canopy), which comes from Baldacco, the medieval Italian name for Baghdad, because the luxurious fabric used for these canopies originally came from that city in the 12th century.
Kelly Says
Medieval traders called the fabric 'Baldacco silk' because it came from Baghdad—so when Europeans wanted to sound fancy about a canopy, they literally named it after where the expensive cloth originated! It's like if we called all fancy leather goods 'Argentineachin' today.
