Baldachino

/ˌbɑːldəˈkiːnoʊ/ noun

Definition

An ornate canopy suspended over an altar, throne, or important person in a church or palace, often made of rich fabric and supported by columns.

Etymology

From Italian baldacchino, derived from Baldacco, the medieval Italian name for Baghdad, since the sumptuous silk fabrics originally came from that city via the Silk Trade routes.

Kelly Says

You can still see these in famous churches today—the baldachino in St. Peter's Basilica is made of bronze and marble and took nearly a decade to build, and it's all there just to frame one spot and make it look incredibly important!
