Banalize

/ˈbænəlaɪz/ verb

Definition

To make something ordinary, uninteresting, or commonplace by overuse or repeated discussion.

Etymology

From banal + -ize (to cause to become). The French banaliser already existed before English adopted the verb form in the mid-20th century during intellectual exchanges about mass culture.

Kelly Says

Social media actually banalizes serious issues—a major tragedy trends for 3 days then disappears, making each successive tragedy feel less shocking because we've 'already seen this story.'
