Definition
Plural of baryon; a class of heavy subatomic particles that includes protons and neutrons.
Etymology
Greek 'barys' (heavy) + '-on' (particle suffix) + '-s' (plural). Coined by physicists in the 1950s when classifying subatomic particles by mass.
Kelly Says
Baryons are held together by the 'strong force'—the most powerful force in nature—which is actually stronger than the electromagnetic force, but it only works at incredibly tiny distances inside atoms!
