Definition
The rarest type of white blood cell that releases histamine and other mediators during allergic reactions. These cells play important roles in inflammation and immediate hypersensitivity responses.
Etymology
From Greek 'basis' meaning base and 'philein' meaning to love, coined in the late 1800s. The name reflects these cells' affinity for basic (alkaline) dyes, which stain their granules dark blue or purple.
Kelly Says
Basophils are like the body's alarm system - despite being less than 1% of all white blood cells, they pack a powerful punch by releasing histamine that causes the familiar symptoms of allergies like runny nose and watery eyes. They're essentially blood-borne versions of mast cells!
