Battarism

/ˈbætərɪzəm/ noun

Definition

A speech defect or impediment where someone mispronounces words, mumbles, or speaks in a confused or garbled manner.

Etymology

From Greek 'battarizein' (to speak indistinctly). Named after someone named Battus who supposedly had this speech problem in ancient texts.

Kelly Says

Battarism is a condition where people drop or mix up syllables when they talk—ancient Greeks noticed this pattern so much they named it after a legendary mumbler!
