Bear

/bɛər/ noun

Definition

A bear is a large, heavy mammal with thick fur and strong claws, found in forests, mountains, and Arctic areas. Bears can be powerful predators but often eat plants as well as meat.

Etymology

“Bear” comes from Old English “bera,” a word that may have meant “the brown one” as a way to avoid saying the animal’s true name. This kind of name-avoidance is seen in several old European languages.

Kelly Says

Some ancient people were so afraid or respectful of bears that they wouldn’t even say the real name, in case it attracted the animal. So the word we use now is probably a kind of nickname that stuck for over a thousand years.
