Definition
To anoint or perfume with civet, a strong-smelling substance from the civet cat used historically in expensive perfumes.
Etymology
From the prefix 'be-' plus 'civet,' which comes from Arabic 'zibad' through Italian and French. Civet was an extremely valuable commodity in medieval and Renaissance Europe for perfumery and medicine.
Kelly Says
Civet was literally more precious than gold in some medieval courts—people would becivet their clothing at great expense, which is hilarious because modern artificial musks can replicate it for pennies!
