Definition
A painful sore or ulcer that develops on a person's skin from lying in bed for too long without moving, usually on bony areas like the hips or heels.
Etymology
From bed + sore. Compounds 'bed' (Old English 'bedd') with 'sore' (Old English 'sor'). The term emerged in medical vocabulary as doctors recognized this injury caused by prolonged pressure while bedridden.
Kelly Says
Bedsores killed countless hospital patients before modern medicine understood that simply moving people regularly could prevent them—it's a haunting reminder that some of the deadliest medical problems have the simplest solutions.
