Belonging

/bɪˈlɒŋɪŋ/ noun

Definition

The feeling of being accepted and included. A fundamental human need — the sense that you are part of something larger than yourself and that your presence matters.

Etymology

From Middle English belongen "to go along with, pertain to," from be- + longen "to be fitting." Belonging literally means being in the right place — fitting. Maslow ranked it alongside food and safety as a core need.
