Berries

/ˈbɛriz/ noun

Definition

Small, round, juicy fruits that grow on bushes or trees, typically sweet and edible. Botanically, any fruit produced from a single flower with one ovary.

Etymology

Old English 'berie', from Proto-Germanic 'bazja'. The word originally applied to grapes, then expanded to include small fruits. Interestingly, botanical berries include grapes and tomatoes, while strawberries and raspberries are not technically berries.

Kelly Says

Many fruits we call 'berries' aren't botanically berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries), while many we don't call berries actually are (grapes, bananas, eggplants). This linguistic quirk shows how common names often precede scientific classification and stick around despite botanical accuracy.
