Etymology
From 'big' plus 'wig'. In the 17th-18th centuries, large ornate wigs signaled wealth, status, and importance, so people wearing them became associated with authority.

Wigs were so crucial to looking important in the 1700s that bald politicians wore fake wigs to court, meaning your hair literally determined if you'd be taken seriously as a bigwig.
