Bilharzia

/bɪlˈhɑːrziə/ noun

Definition

A parasitic disease caused by flatworms (schistosomes) found in tropical regions, transmitted through contaminated water and causing serious health problems.

Etymology

Named after Theodor Bilharz, a German physician who discovered the parasitic worm in 1851 while working in Egypt. The disease organism is Schistosoma, but Bilharz's name was attached to the condition in his honor.

Kelly Says

Bilharzia affects over 200 million people worldwide today, mostly in Africa—it's one of the most impactful parasitic diseases ever, yet most people in developed countries have never heard of it, showing how disease burden is unequally distributed across the world!
