Bite the bullet

Definition

To face a difficult or unpleasant situation with courage and determination; to endure something painful but necessary.

Etymology

This phrase allegedly comes from battlefield surgery before anesthesia, when soldiers would bite on a bullet or leather strap to endure pain during operations. However, this origin is disputed, and it may actually derive from the military practice of biting cartridges to open them before loading rifles.

Kelly Says

Whether from surgery or ammunition, the phrase brilliantly captures that moment when we must literally clench our teeth and push through something difficult. The physical act of biting down becomes a perfect metaphor for mental determination and resolve!
