Boast

/boʊst/ (US), /bəʊst/ (UK) verb

Definition

To boast is to talk with too much pride about your abilities, achievements, or things you own.

Etymology

It comes from Middle English “bosten,” influenced by Old Norse “bástr,” meaning “bragging” or “threatening.” The word has long carried a sense of noisy self-praise.

Kelly Says

Interestingly, we also say a city “boasts” a museum or a hotel “boasts” a pool, where the pride feels more neutral. The word dances between annoying arrogance and simple confidence depending on who is talking.
