Definition
A type of artificial fishing fly designed to move with a bobbing or jerking motion in water to attract fish.
Etymology
Compound of 'bob' (jerking movement) + 'fly' (artificial lure); developed as fly fishing techniques became more specialized in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Kelly Says
Expert fly fishermen discovered that the way they retrieve their line—creating that characteristic bob and pause, bob and pause—triggers predatory instincts in fish better than any natural insect could.
