Bogs

/bɔɡz/ noun

Definition

Plural of bog; wetland areas characterized by acidic, waterlogged soil and specialized plant communities, especially sphagnum moss. Areas of soft, muddy ground.

Etymology

From Middle Irish and Scottish Gaelic 'bogach,' meaning 'soft' or 'bog.' The word entered English through contact with Celtic languages in areas where such wetlands were common.

Kelly Says

Bogs are nature's time capsules - their acidic, oxygen-poor conditions preserve organic matter so well that 2,000-year-old human bodies have been found perfectly preserved in European bogs! These 'bog bodies' provide incredible insights into ancient life and death.
