Bolimba

/boʊˈlɪmbə/ noun

Definition

A traditional West African musical instrument, related to the marimba, consisting of wooden bars struck with mallets over resonating gourds.

Etymology

From Bantu languages of Central and West Africa; 'bolimba' combines the Bantu root 'bali' (many) with 'imba' (song), literally 'many songs' or 'rich music'.

Kelly Says

The bolimba shares an ancient ancestry with Asian and Latin American percussion instruments—it's evidence of how humans independently invented the same brilliant idea for making music across continents and millennia!
