Bombastic

/bɑmˈbæstɪk/ adjective

Definition

Using pompous or pretentious language that sounds impressive but lacks substance. Characterized by high-sounding but meaningless speech or writing.

Etymology

From Greek 'bombyx' meaning silk, through Latin 'bombax' for cotton padding. Originally referred to cotton stuffing used to pad out clothing, later metaphorically applied to speech padded with empty words.

Kelly Says

Think of a balloon filled with hot air - it looks big and impressive but there's nothing substantial inside! The 'bomb-' beginning can remind you of something that explodes with noise but no real impact.
