Definition
A genus of small marine worms found in tropical and subtropical waters, known for their ability to change sex depending on environmental conditions.
Etymology
Named after the Italian naturalist Filippo Bonelli (1781-1830) by French zoologist Émile Blanchard in the 19th century. The Latin suffix '-ia' denotes a genus in scientific classification.

Bonellia worms literally decide their sex based on where they land on the ocean floor—larvae that settle on the seafloor become females, while those in the water column become males! This incredible biological switch was one of the first clear examples of environmental sex determination in animals.
