Definition
A leaping marsupial from northeastern Australia, also known as Dendrolagus bennettii, similar to a tree kangaroo.
Etymology
From Gubbi Gubbi (Australian Aboriginal) language, where 'boongary' refers to a type of tree-dwelling marsupial native to Queensland rainforests.
Kelly Says
The boongary is a living fossil of sorts—tree kangaroos are so specialized and rare that scientists studying them are essentially exploring a branch of marsupial evolution that diverged millions of years ago from their ground-dwelling cousins.
