Definition
Illegal copies or recordings of music, films, or software; or to make and sell such unauthorized copies.
Etymology
From 'bootleg' which originated from Prohibition-era alcohol smuggling (bottles hidden in boot legs); now used for any unauthorized reproduction.
Kelly Says
Bootleg recordings are actually crucial to rock and roll history—many of the best live performances from the 1960s and 70s survive only as bootlegs that fans recorded and traded, creating an alternative archive that official companies never preserved.
