Definition
A genus of parasitic crustaceans belonging to the family Bopyridae, named scientifically and known to infect the gills and body cavities of shrimp.
Etymology
From New Latin scientific nomenclature, possibly combining Greek roots; used in biological taxonomy to classify a group of related parasitic crustaceans within the larger family Bopyridae.
Kelly Says
Bopyrus represents a fascinating moment in scientific naming where Linnaeus and later taxonomists had to create Latin names for creatures so bizarre that naturalists initially weren't sure what they were looking at—some early scientists thought they were organs rather than separate organisms.
