Borders

/ˈbɔːrdərz/ noun

Definition

The edges or boundaries that separate one area, country, or region from another. Can also refer to decorative edges around something.

Etymology

From Old French 'bordure' meaning 'edge, rim', ultimately from Germanic roots related to 'board'. The political sense of national boundaries developed in medieval times as nation-states formed.

Kelly Says

Many of the world's borders are surprisingly arbitrary lines drawn by colonial powers or negotiated in treaties, often cutting through natural communities and ecosystems. The longest undefended border in the world is between Canada and the United States, stretching over 5,500 miles.
