Borracha

/bɔˈrɑtʃə/ noun

Definition

A leather bag or flask, originally used in Spain and Spanish America to carry wine or water, often made from a whole animal hide.

Etymology

From Spanish borracha, feminine form of borracho (drunk), because these bags were often used to carry alcohol. The Spanish word likely derives from an Arabic origin related to water skins used in the Mediterranean.

Kelly Says

Before plastic bottles existed, Spanish conquistadors brought borrachas to the New World—they were so practical that some versions are still used today in places like Mexico and the American Southwest for carrying beverages on long journeys.
