Definition
Low-lying flat land, especially near a river that floods periodically and has rich soil.
Etymology
Compound of 'bottom' (lowest part) and 'land,' used since the 1700s in American English to describe fertile river valleys in the Mississippi and Ohio regions.
Kelly Says
Bottomland is incredibly fertile because rivers deposit nutrient-rich silt during floods—this is why ancient civilizations like Egypt's prospered along the Nile, and why American farmers prized bottomland for crops.
