Definition
The flat bone in the center front of the chest that connects the ribs; also called the sternum.
Etymology
Compound: 'breast' (chest) + 'bone.' Direct translation of Latin 'sternum,' from Greek 'sternon.' Common in English since at least the 1400s for anatomical reference.
Kelly Says
Your breastbone is shaped like an upside-down sword—and it has to be incredibly strong because it's basically the anchor point for muscles and bones that protect your heart and lungs, bearing the stress every time you breathe, laugh, or get hit.
