Etymology
Named after the German mineralogist Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Breunner in the 19th century, with the suffix '-ite' used to denote minerals; the mineral was identified and classified by mineralogists studying iron deposits.

Breunnerite is what happens when dolomite (a common mineral) decides to get rusty—the iron content gives it its distinctive brownish color, and geologists named it to honor the scientist who first understood what made it special.
