Etymology

Compound of bride plus cake. Medieval bridecakes were often highly spiced fruit cakes, very different from modern white wedding cakes.

Medieval bridecakes were so hard guests would break them over the bride's head—the crumbs scattered on her were supposed to bring fertility, making destruction part of the blessing ritual.
