Britain

/ˈbrɪt.ən/ proper noun

Definition

Britain usually refers to the island containing England, Scotland, and Wales, or more loosely to the United Kingdom. It has a long history of empire, industry, and cultural influence.

Etymology

From Old French “Bretaigne,” from Latin “Britannia,” the Roman name for the island. The word likely comes from a Celtic term used by the island’s original inhabitants, meaning something like “the painted people,” referring to body paint or tattoos.

Kelly Says

When the Romans said “Britannia,” they weren’t talking about a country with clear borders like today, but a distant island full of tribes. The name survived through invasions, language changes, and empires, which is why a Roman word still sits on modern maps.
