Bronchopleurisy

/ˌbrɑŋkoʊˈplʊərəsi/ noun

Definition

Inflammation of both the bronchial tubes and the pleura (the membrane surrounding the lungs), usually occurring together as part of a lung infection.

Etymology

From Greek 'bronchos' (windpipe) + 'pleuritis' (inflammation of the pleura). Combines two classical disease terms that doctors noticed frequently occurred simultaneously, so they created a combined term.

Kelly Says

When you have bronchopleurisy, you get chest pain that's worse when you breathe or cough because you're dealing with inflammation on the inside and outside of the lungs at the same time, which is why it feels worse than regular pneumonia.
