Brunch

/brʌntʃ/ noun

Definition

A late morning meal that combines breakfast and lunch, typically served between 10 AM and 2 PM.

Etymology

Portmanteau word combining 'breakfast' and 'lunch', coined in 1896 by British author Guy Beringer. The concept emerged from the leisurely weekend dining culture of the late 19th century.

Kelly Says

Brunch was originally proposed as a hangover cure for Saturday night revelers, making it perhaps the first meal specifically designed around modern social drinking culture. The word itself is one of the most successful portmanteaus in English, completely replacing the need to say 'breakfast-lunch combination'.
