Definition
Plants belonging to bryophyta, including mosses and liverworts, that reproduce by spores rather than seeds.
Etymology
From Greek 'bryo-' (moss) plus 'phytes' (plant organisms). This is the anglicized term for members of the bryophyta division, used commonly in English-language biology.
Kelly Says
Bryophytes are sometimes called 'moss trackers' by ecologists because they're incredibly sensitive to air pollution—scientists literally use the health and diversity of bryophytes growing on trees as a living pollution meter for their region.
