Definition
Jumping and twisting violently (like a horse), or resisting and opposing something strongly.
Etymology
From Old English buc- (to bend or arch). Horses 'bucking' literally buck their backs up to throw riders, and the word metaphorically expanded to mean resisting any authority.
Kelly Says
When someone is 'bucking the system,' they're using the exact same word cowboys used for wild horses—language often compares human rebels to untamed animals, revealing what societies feared most.
