Definition
A small Asian fish, also called bombay duck, used extensively in Indian cuisine and traditionally dried for preservation.
Etymology
From Marathi 'bomil' or related Indian languages, the word entered English through colonial trade in the 18th century when British traders encountered this important food fish.
Kelly Says
Despite being called 'bombay duck,' it's not a duck at all—it's a quirky naming mix-up from colonial times that stuck around and confused people for centuries!
