Bunting

/ˈbʌntɪŋ/ noun

Definition

Decorative flags or streamers hung in celebration, or a type of small songbird with a stout bill. Can also refer to a baby's sleeping bag.

Etymology

Multiple origins: the bird name comes from Middle English buntin, possibly from Scottish Gaelic buntata 'plump'. The fabric/flag meaning comes from 18th century 'bunt' (sift grain through cloth), referring to the coarse cloth used. The baby garment sense developed in the 20th century.

Kelly Says

The word 'bunting' is a perfect example of linguistic convergence - three completely unrelated things (birds, flags, and baby clothes) share the same name through historical accidents. The flag meaning actually comes from the sieving cloth used to make ship's colors.
