Definition
Citizens of a town or burgh, especially those with property, trading rights, or participation in town government; plural of burgher.
Etymology
From Middle Dutch 'burger', derived from 'borg' (fortified place), referring to residents of fortified towns; evolved to mean prosperous townspeople with civic standing.
Kelly Says
In paintings from 1600s Holland, 'burghers' were the middle-class people—merchants, craftspeople, professionals—who were making towns richer and more powerful than the nobility.
