Burgware

/ˈbɜːɡwɛr/ noun

Definition

Goods, merchandise, or produce owned or made within a medieval borough or fortified town; goods subject to borough regulations.

Etymology

From burg (fortified town) + ware (goods/merchandise). Medieval towns had special rights to sell certain goods, and 'burgware' was merchandise associated with burgher rights.

Kelly Says

Medieval burgers (burgesses) had monopolies on certain trades—if you wanted to sell cloth or bread in their town, you had to be a burger or pay them fees!
