Definition
Past tense of burke; to suppress something quietly and indirectly, or historically to smother a person (a crime method).
Etymology
From William Burke (1792-1829), an Irish murderer in Edinburgh who smothered victims to leave no marks. The verb 'burke' was created from his name and entered English as both a literal and figurative term.
Kelly Says
William Burke's name became so notorious that English speakers turned his surname into a verb—this is called an 'eponym'—and the word is still used today to mean covering something up, showing how a single criminal's notoriety shaped the English language permanently.
