Busycon

/ˈbɪziˌkɑn/ noun

Definition

A genus of large sea snails found along the Atlantic coast of North America, commonly called busycon whelks or conches.

Etymology

From Latin 'busy' (perhaps from the snail's active behavior) combined with Greek 'konē' (cone), referring to the shell's cone-like shape. The scientific name was formalized in the 18th century by naturalists studying marine mollusks.

Kelly Says

These massive whelks can grow larger than a human fist and were used as tools by Native Americans—their shells were carved into cutting implements and fishing weights, making them some of the most useful shells in pre-Columbian North America.
