Butment

/ˈbʌtmənt/ noun

Definition

An architectural term for a buttress or projecting support built against a wall to strengthen it.

Etymology

From Old French butement, derived from butter (to butt, push against). It evolved from the physical action of pushing or supporting against something.

Kelly Says

Butments were especially important in Gothic architecture—those projecting stone supports you see on medieval cathedrals were often called flying butments, and they let architects build impossibly tall walls that would otherwise collapse.
