Definition
A genus of aquatic flowering plants, particularly the flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus), known for their pink or red flowers and sharp leaves.
Etymology
From Greek bous (ox) plus temnein (to cut), describing the sharp leaves dangerous to grazing animals. The genus was formally named by Linnaeus in the 18th century.
Kelly Says
Butomus umbellatus is actually not a rush at all despite its common name—it's an alismatid, and aquatic botanists confused it for centuries because it shares the sharp leaf trait with actual rushes.
