Definition
Plural of cabal; small groups of people united in some close design, often secret or conspiratorial.
Etymology
From 'cabal,' ultimately from Hebrew 'qabbalah' (tradition/reception), which entered European languages in the 17th century with mystical associations before becoming associated with secret political plotting.
Kelly Says
Medieval Jewish mysticism ('Kabbalah') got tangled up with European paranoia about secret political groups, and suddenly the word for ancient spiritual traditions became the word for sneaky conspiracies!
