Definition
The fruit or seed pod of various burlike plants, especially those that cling to clothing or animal fur.
Etymology
From Spanish cadillo, diminutive of Spanish cardo (thistle), from Latin cardus. The Spanish term eventually spread through English-speaking agricultural regions.
Kelly Says
Cadillos are those annoying plant seeds that stick to your socks—the Spanish had a whole diminutive word for them, showing how Spanish speakers were intimately familiar with this agricultural nuisance.
