Definition
A surgical procedure in which an opening is created between the caecum (the beginning of the large intestine) and the abdominal wall to allow waste to bypass damaged parts of the intestine.
Etymology
From caecum (blind intestine) + -stomy (surgical opening), combining Latin caecus (blind) with Greek stoma (mouth). The term emerged in 19th-century medical practice as surgical techniques advanced.

Doctors originally called this part of the intestine 'blind' because in early anatomical dissections, they couldn't see where it led—it appeared to be a dead end! In reality, it's where your small intestine connects to your colon.
