Cain

/keɪn/ noun

Definition

Biblical figure, the first son of Adam and Eve who killed his brother Abel, or used to refer to a murderer.

Etymology

From Hebrew 'Qayin,' possibly meaning 'acquired' or 'spear.' In Genesis, Eve says 'I have acquired a man with the help of the Lord' when naming Cain.

Kelly Says

Cain's name might mean 'acquired' from Hebrew, but ironically he became the first person to lose everything through jealousy and murder. The 'mark of Cain' has become a powerful symbol of guilt and divine protection combined.
