Calendar

/ˈkæləndər/ noun

Definition

A calendar is a system for organizing days, weeks, and months into a year, and also a printed or digital chart that shows these dates. People use it to plan events and keep track of time.

Etymology

From Latin 'calendarium' meaning 'account book,' from 'calendae,' the first day of the Roman month when debts were recorded. Over time, the word shifted from the ledger to the system of days itself. Different cultures built their own calendars based on the sun, moon, or both.

Kelly Says

Originally, a calendar was more about money than birthdays—it told you when to pay up. The idea that time itself can be 'owed' or 'scheduled' shows how humans turned the sky’s cycles into social rules. Even now, your digital calendar is like a personal debt book of promises you’ve made to future time.
