Definition
A keyboard instrument with loud, bright steam whistles or organ pipes, often used in circuses and carnivals.
Etymology
From Greek mythology, Calliope was the Muse of epic poetry. The instrument was named after her in the 1800s, perhaps because its piercing sound 'announces' like a muse of grand speech.
Kelly Says
A calliope's shrill whistles are so loud they were designed to call people from across the fairground—the instrument named after the Muse of grand poetry actually functioned as an advertisement, turning high art into carnival hawking.
