Definition
Plural of calypso; songs, dances, or performers from the Caribbean musical tradition of Trinidad and Tobago.
Etymology
From Greek mythology (Calypso the nymph) adapted into Caribbean English in the late 1800s and early 1900s to describe the emerging musical genre from Trinidad. The plural form follows standard English conventions for words ending in -o.
Kelly Says
The term 'calypsos' can refer to songs that were literally used as newspapers before widespread literacy—calysonians would compose new verses about current events, scandals, and politics, making it the original social media!
