Definition
A large drinking cup or goblet used in ancient Greece and Rome; also, a genus of fish (sea breams).
Etymology
From Greek 'kantharos' meaning 'drinking cup' or 'beetle.' The cup was named after the beetle possibly due to its shape or handles. Later applied to fish by Linnaeus.
Kelly Says
The cantharus cup was so iconic in ancient Greece that it appears in countless paintings on pottery—and naming a fish after it shows how Renaissance scientists loved connecting natural creatures to classical culture!
